Hungry. We had tooled about D.C., looking at the monuments and the sights and I hit the Google looking for a unique D.C. spot. We found something right off the Metro on U Street, Ben’s Chili Bowl.

This burger and dog..err… Half-Smoke shack may have been our first time visit but it has been visit by the like of Barak, George W. Duke Ellington, Oprah, Bono, Antony Bourdain and Martin Luthor King Jr.

Yes, the food is that good and you can tell by the way there is always people filling the place. But it’s not the burgers, or the half-smokes or the fries… It’s the magic of the Chili Sauce !

There’s nothing like it! You want that on everything! You want to take it home with you!

But also the place is full of friends. The atmosphere is busy. Pumping. People eating and going about their day/evening. Getting full. Take out.

Ben and Virginia established a shop with a love for food; a love for community and a love for each other. They opened a business to feed us though the strife of the Civil Rights fight, the burning of their community, Covid and even death.

I’ve met Virgina and she feeds the soul as her food feed the body. It may not be the Ritz-Carlton, but it is the heart of D.C.

There’s also a location on H Street.

See you there!

The Traveler roams the East Coast with a camera in one hand, a tasting journal in the other, and a knack for finding the soul of a place between bites, sips, and local lore. From velvet-seated flights in the shadow of Pilot Mountain to late-night garbage plates under fluorescent lights, every stop is more than a location—it's a story, waiting to be uncorked.
