The Side Trip
My girlfriend (now wife) were on our way home from Suffolk VA to Raleigh NC one weekend and decided to detour east along the coast and see the sea.
So instead of heading South, we hooked East to Currituck and followed the route below all the way down, eventually ending up at Ocracoke Lighthouse late in the afternoon. Because we had to make it back home in a reasonable hour (work in the AM) we couldn’t take in all of the things that draws people to this edge of the country.
So it was a quick morning run down to Kitty Kawk, a tourist magnet. You can see the largest sand dune on the East Coast (75 ft high!), Jockey’s Ridge. This is less than 4 miles from the famous Kill Devil Hills where the Ohio native Wright Bothers “Took Flight“. We were hungry by this time and only stopped to take a picture or two of the Big Dune.

By this time we were jonesing for some seafood. We looked for a specific place called Captain Georges and gorged ourselves to Satisfaction.
Now, I will kid you now, the Outer Banks is a long road. Something that is not like any other place. Sometimes you can see water on the left and right sides of the road, sand and an asphalt ribbon stretching to the horizon. We just had a storm so the sand sometimes covered the road so you had a panorama of teal-grey/brown-gold/green-blue as you looked from the Atlantic across the sandbar you’re driving down to the Pablico Sound. If you’re going to make this drive, throw in some tunes.
To Be Continued….
